There are many different categories of photographs. This is a list of the main ones I can think of.
Large Scale – shows a large environment with everything zoomed out.

Nature – shows the natural environment and the animals that live in them. When plants are involved this type of photography is done at close range.

Commercial – used to sell a product by capturing different features of the product.

Landscape – used for a large open environment such as hills or mountains.

Portrait – used for photos of models.

Marine – used for photos at sea, showing a range of ships, usually taken from the air or far away.

Urban – photos of buildings in cities from above or below.

Street – photos taken while walking around a city, captures people walking or shopping.

Aerial – photos taken from the air, using drones, helicopters or planes.

Sport – used to show an athlete in the equipment for their type of sport, uses a high shutter speed to freeze the athlete.

War – used in warfare to capture violence and danger as well as show a country’s military power for propaganda purposes.

Event – used at events such as weddings and gigs to capture the performers and the crowd’s reaction to them. Requires a press pass for some types of event.

Fashion – used to show clothes and famous people using creative styles.

Underwater – used to capture underwater life, can be included within nature photography.
